Thyroid storm, also referred to as thyrotoxic crisis, represents a severe and potentially life-threatening condition. Although it is a relatively rare condition, occurring in only 1% to 2% of patients with hyperthyroidism, if left untreated, thyroid storm can be fatal, sometimes within days.

Treatment of thyrotoxic crisis is multimodal. Initial medical and supportive therapies are directed at stabilizing the patient, correcting the hyperthyroid state, managing the systemic decompensation, and treating the underlying cause.
